How we began our journey to empower communities across Africa
From Humble Beginnings to Nationwide Impact
The journey of WellRoot Africa began with a simple classroom initiative. While living in Cape Coast, Akotokyiri, our Founder, gathered children from the community for vacation classes at the local information centre. Both public and private school children attended, and one truth became undeniable: although they lived in the same community, their opportunities were not equal.
Private school children performed better in reading, writing, and numeracy, while public school children—though academically disadvantaged—excelled in creativity. This gap reflected a deeper issue: the foundations. Private schools were better resourced and structured, while public schools lacked the support needed to help children thrive.
Later, through her work as a Project Officer in the Ashanti Region, witnessed the same challenges repeating across communities: children going to school hungry, malnutrition, under-resourced schools, and families walking long distances to reach healthcare. These realities affirmed her conviction that lasting change must begin at the roots.
This conviction gave birth to WellRoot Africa-a child-focused, community-driven organization committed to strengthening the foundations of education, health, nutrition, and well-being. At WellRoot Africa, we believe that when the soil is enriched and the roots are strong, children and communities will grow into strong branches, bearing beautiful flowers and fruitful futures.
